A year ago the hunt began for the time and place that we would be able to join together as a family. With 6 different family units attempting to find agreeable times, the discovery phase in itself is a challenge. Once the stars align, the excitement and anticipation begin.
This time last year, the stars, indeed, aligned and we all began dreaming of spending a few days together in the cool mountain air of North Georgia.
Without an agenda or itinerary, we began the week with a view from the porch that has about a twelve-mile, southerly view across four mountain ranges. The air was crisp and light and the trees were beautiful and green. The sound of familiar voices floods through the house as everyone arrived, and my heart was filled with gratitude for this time together.
The first day of adventure lead us on a hike around Tallulah Falls. We climbed more steps than any of us thought humanly possible! Spectacular views and the sounds of waterfalls kept us climbing. The laughter, conversation, and encouragement to continue on was shared by all. The day ended with a picnic under the shade trees. Sharing meals together is always the best. This is where relationships are formed around the table. Where we ask interesting questions, laugh, and make memories.
Campfires also bring the opportunity to show some love, while the game of corn hole sparks the competitive side in most of us. Smoke, the gooey goodness of s'mores, and music fills the night air. Again, laughter roars through the trees.
This is what life is all about. Slowing down, having conversations, building trust, and showing love to one another. This is what makes us a family. Whether blood relation or not makes no difference.
We are better off for this time together; knowing and understanding that we each have a place here. A place of belonging and acceptance. A place to be loved and to love.
And so the cycle will begin again, with planning, deciding, and anticipating the next family adventure, where we'll have another chance to come together and continue to grow closer.
Until next year...
